Periodiocally Aperiodical - Aperiodically Periodical (2002) by Patricio da Silva, commissioned by the Ojai Music Festival in California, chamber music for quintet with flute, bass clarinet, piano, violin, and cello, premiered by the ensemble California Ear-Unit.
Patricio da Silva's Periodiocally Aperiodical - Aperiodically Periodical, also known as the "Rhythmicon" Quintet, is inspired by the Rhythmicon, the instrument devised by Joseph Schillinger and built by Leon Theremin based on the principle that rhythm and tone consist of the same phenomena operating at different time scales. In the piece Periodiocally Aperiodical - Periodical Aperiodically the rhythm of each individual note in the chromatic scale is individually controlled, so that the succession of same note articulations result in a constant rhythmic acceleration or deceleration while maintaining a constant proportion between different lengths of cycles. The same temporal behavior is then observed at three different scales used simultaneously.

Inspirado pelo conceito do Rhythmicon, um instrumento idealizado por Joseph Schillinger e construído por Leon Theremin baseado no princípio que ritmo e tom consistem do mesmo fenômeno operando em diferentes escalas temporais, em Periodiocally Aperiodical - Aperiodically Periodical, o ritmo de cada nota da escala cromática é controlado individualmente. Contudo, aqui, a sucessão de articulações da mesma nota no decorrer da obra resulta numa constante aceleração ou desaceleração rítmica, enquanto mantendo uma proporção constante. O mesmo comportamento rítmico é observado depois em três diferentes escalas temporais utilizadas em simultâneo.
